Heart disease is a devastating threat to women in the United States, claiming the lives of a staggering 314,186 women in 2020 alone, accounting for one out of every four female deaths.
The Local 1487 Women’s Committee recently held its annual “Go Red” luncheon as part of a broader effort to raise awareness about heart disease. The luncheon informed attendees about the risks and warning signs of heart disease. Participants also participated in dance and exercise classes.

The American Heart Association reports that nearly half of all women live with some form of cardiovascular disease. However, many women are unaware of the risks associated with heart disease and the specific dangers posed by life stages, such as pregnancy and menopause.
“I’m proud to recognize IAM Local 1487 as they ‘go red’ for women’s heart health,” said IAM Air Transport Territory General Vice President Richie Johnsen. “Heart disease claims far too many lives each year, especially among women. Through events like the ‘Go Red’ luncheon, we’re raising awareness and empowering women with vital knowledge about heart health. I applaud Local 1487 for continuing to educate and advocate to ensure every woman knows the risks and takes steps to protect her heart.”
Guests from District 141 included President and Directing General Chair Mike Klemm, Special Representative Jen Jolly, Community Service Director Cristina Odoardi, and MNPL Director Dave Roderick. The International was represented by Women’s and Young Workers Department Director Julie Frietchen and Human Rights Director Nicole Fears.
