JULY & AUGUST 2010
This summer newsletter is a two month issue covering both July and August.
106 members attended the July Brown Bagger meeting. We had 11 raffle winners who were Betty Heston (2) , Lucy Backus (2), Bill Gatesman, Judy Hibbert, Harvey Bruning, Stanley Fukai, Elizabeth Barker, Javier (Mr. Lucky) Chavez and one name the editor was unable to read.
We have revised our meeting schedule in order to move our Oktoberfest into the month of October this year. The revised meeting schedule for the rest of the year is as follows:
August – Brown bagger along with a Day At The Races;
September – Eat & Meet; October – Oktoberfest Eat & Meet;
November Brown Bagger; December – Christmas Luncheon.
SEPTEMBER MEET & EAT – Please bring in a dish to share with ten others in accordance with the following schedule -
A - G, Dessert H - O, Entree P - Z, Salad
For the Oktoberfest meet & eat, bratwurst and buns with all the trimmings will be provided with the members bringing in dishes in accord with the rotating schedule. Details will be listed in the September newsletter.
Trips and things.
For those signed up for the fall casino trip to the Island Resort and Oneida Casinos, please make sure you get your money to Pat Artman by August 8th.
A reminder if you’re signed up for the Lunch Bunch at Pilot Pete’s, it is set for next Tuesday, July 27th. See you there at 1:00 p.m.
August Day At The Races meeting is set for Thursday, August 5th. The races feature stylish, charming and daring jockeys, cheering fans, famous race personalities such as Track Steward Ray Prost overseeing the wagers and Track Announcer Dick Hoppel calling the thrilling changing of the lead horses and electrifying finishes. This will surely be an exhilarating day.
Of course the birthday observances and the standard raffles will also be held.
We had to cancel the AARP safe driving course scheduled for this month because we didn’t have enough participants. Stan Fukai, our resident certified instructor says we can try it again this fall to see if there is more interest. The course consists of two sessions of four hours each over two days. Past classes have been well attended and once the course is completed, auto insurance companies usually give a nice discount.
The Lodge is sponsoring a golf outing at the Polar creek Country Club in Hoffman Estates.
Enjoy a complete program of special events, 18 holes of golf, cart, lunch with an exciting open bar buffet. Longest drive contests, closet to the pin challenges and longest practice putt with prizes up to $100.00
Date: August 11, 2010
Cost: $55 per player
Registration: 6;00 a.m, shotgun start
Tee-off at 7:15 a.m.
The longest putt contest is $2.00 per attempt. 50/50 split of all money collected with other half donated to the Local Lodge 1487 retirees club!
Retirees are encouraged to sign up for the outing. Also, the lodge is seeking a few retirees to help run the outing with things such as registration and contests. If you can help, contact the Local Lodge President, Joe Bartz: 708-203-3644 or email at jbartz@iamlocal1487.org.
If you can help out, a free buffet lunch (with bar) is included! Poplar Creek has a great banquet facility with truly good food. Check your calendar. It will be a good, fun time whether you play or help out.
A UAL retiree? – You may want to look at the IAM (United) website for some info on the UAL/CAL merger. Go to IAM141.org. Click on merger on the top menu. A video of a recent meeting with UAL and CAL personnel/labor relations vice presidents and the IAM is available for viewing along with other information. It is narrated by Local 1487 member Rich Delaney, president of District Lodge 141. Of course, much of the current concentration is on active employees but retirees may find it of interest. And as always, it is well to keep in mind that mergers have an effect on the retired employees as well.
A NWA retiree? – On July 1st, the IAM petitioned the government for an election among the NWA/DAL employees in the Fleet Service and Passenger Service classifications. The election will determine whether the employees choose to be represented by a union. Obviously, the outcome will affect the NWA retirees one way or the other. The IAM is still investigating the status of the Office and Clerical and Stock Clerk groups at Delta which include many former NWA IAM members.
Reminders:
Club Secretary Dave Dunham maintains our list of email addresses for the members. If you haven’t already done so, please send him your email address so he can put you on the list. Email is a principal method we use for club notices, and reports of illness and passings among our membership. Dave’s email is daviddd@msn.com.
Dues are still $6 per year. They can be paid ahead of time and that way you won’t get the old red “dues due” stamp on your newsletter. Check your name in the red membership booklet to see when yours are due.
